Balanced DIet

One of the things that I'm happy about is that Rama eats veggies. She would eat steamed brocolli florets like it was popcorn, to the amazement of some adults. She would nibble on lettuce and celery as snacks. She would ask for more servings of spinach.

While lately she seems to have grown tired of brocolli, she has moved on to other veggies. One of our faves here is artichokes. She enjoys the elaborate ritual of eating it. With confidence, she would instruct other adults on the ritual, too. And she eagerly anticipates the reward at the end - the juicy, tasty heart.

Sinigang was always a favorite, including the kang kong (or spinach). And I had to find a substitute, too, for eggplant, as the eggplants here were massive. No way I could use all that in one small pot of sinigang for two. So instead of talong, brussel sprouts went into my pot. She liked that, too.

Yesterday, we went into a Chinese grocery, which as it turns out, also sells Filipino food. In the veggie aisle, Rama picked out cauliflower. When we got to the Filipino products section, she just had to quickly - even violently - grab this bag that she saw. Sabay sigaw: Chicharon!

Have you ever tried using "broccoletti" or broccoli rabe?
They're a variation of broccoli. They impart a very mild bitterness that is nice against the bitterness of the soup.

Hi, Mari. Will keep my eyes peeled for that one, thanks. And thanks for dropping by!

hahahaha!! i remember me and pepper's first time to move in our place in eastwood. rama was our very first guest and we brought her to the supermarket. when we passed by the aisle of the chicharon, she politely, yet with excitment, asked "tita pepper, pwede ba natin to bilin?". so we did and she immediately opened it when we got to the condo. we didnt have a coffee table in the sala so she was eating it off the pack while her bowl of suka was on the floor.

btw, chicharon is also my weakness hehehehe!

Hey Shred! Miss you guys. Easy on the chicharon. I love it - you have your own rama-chicharon story!

Hey Possum! Thanks for your note. Toronto is so close - you should really come here. Mi casa, su casa. My couch is a pull-out - if you don't mind that. Come na!!!

Hey nicely. Thanks for that. And chicharon is really popular, no? I myself am vegetarian - can't relate.

Hey Nicely and Shred! Thanks for the tip. We haven't seen Transformers, but we'll make time for it this coming week. What I remember tripping on a while back were these transformers videos on youtube of people making their own robot-costumes that would, well, transform. Aliw.

Rama continues to amaze me even from a million miles away! She reminds me of my niece who would happily eat a bowl of green peas or baby carrots(while I munched on potato chips) while we watched her favorite TV shows. I always felt so guilty, but not quite because she loved what she was eating! I hope my future kids love veggies like Rama does. :)

Hi, Christine! She has her fair share of chips, too. And gummies and jellies. i'm just glad that she's not averse to the good stuff. When adults eat well, kids eat well, too. Munch away!
